Freelance Brand Art Director / Directeur(trice) artistique de marque — Freelance

New York Holdings

Montréal, Quebec, Canadacontract

(Version en français plus bas) About the Role Invisible Colors is looking for a Freelance Brand Art Director to help shape distinctive visual identities and creative worlds for brands, campaigns, and experiences. We’re looking for someone who can take a strategic idea and turn it into a strong visual point of view — from the initial concept and moodboards through to the development of complete brand systems and creative executions. You have a strong understanding of branding and visual culture, but you’re not interested in following formulas. You know how to build visual languages that feel intentional, contemporary, and ownable, and you’re equally comfortable thinking big-picture or obsessing over the smallest detail. This is a freelance opportunity with the potential to collaborate across a variety of projects, industries, and creative formats. What You’ll Do Develop creative direction and visual concepts for new and evolving brands. Create and evolve brand identities, visual languages, and design systems. Translate brand strategy and positioning into compelling visual concepts. Develop moodboards, creative territories, visual references, and presentation decks. Establish art direction across typography, color, composition, imagery, illustration, motion, and other visual elements. Extend brand identities across digital, social, web, campaigns, print, physical environments, and experiential activations. Provide clear creative direction to designers, photographers, videographers, animators, and other creative partners. Collaborate with strategists, copywriters, designers, producers, and clients to develop ideas from concept through execution. Present and articulate creative concepts clearly, explaining the thinking behind the work. Ensure creative consistency and quality across multiple touchpoints and deliverables. Push concepts beyond the expected and identify opportunities to make the work more distinctive, culturally relevant, and memorable. Stay curious about emerging visual trends, technology, culture, AI, design, photography, fashion, music, and other influences that can inform creative work. Participate in creative brainstorms and contribute ideas beyond your immediate area of expertise. Adapt quickly between different brands, industries, creative challenges, and visual styles. What We’re Looking For Proven experience as an Art Director, Brand Art Director, Senior Designer, or similar creative role. Strong experience developing or evolving brand identities and visual systems. A portfolio demonstrating strong art direction, branding, conceptual thinking, and visual storytelling. Excellent understanding of typography, composition, color, imagery, layout, and visual hierarchy. Strong conceptual and strategic thinking, with the ability to connect creative ideas back to a brand’s objectives. Ability to develop a distinctive visual point of view while working within a broader brand strategy. Experience taking creative concepts from early exploration through to final execution. Strong presentation and communication skills. Ability to give thoughtful, constructive creative direction and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. Comfortable working independently and managing multiple creative projects or priorities. Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger creative idea. Curiosity and openness to experimentation, new technologies, and emerging creative tools. Experience working within a creative agency, branding studio, production company, or similarly fast-paced creative environment is an asset. Bonus Points Experience with integrated campaigns and experiential / physical brand activations. Experience directing photography, video, motion, or other visual production. Strong understanding of digital and social-first creative. Experience working with emerging technologies, AI tools, or generative design workflows. Experience working with lifestyle, technology, fashion, beauty, entertainment, hospitality, or consumer brands. Ability to move between high-level creative direction and hands-on design when needed. How You Work We’re less interested in titles and credentials than in how you think and what you make. You’re someone who: Has a strong visual point of view. Can explain why an idea works, not just what it looks like. Knows when to follow the brief — and when to challenge it. Is comfortable with ambiguity and figuring things out along the way. Can work collaboratively without losing your creative voice. Cares about the details that make good work feel exceptional. Brings curiosity, taste, and energy to the creative process. What We Offer Freelance, project-based collaboration. Opportunity to work across a diverse range of brands, industries, and creative challenges. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary creative team across branding, strategy, digital, content, production, and emerging technology. Flexible, remote-friendly work environment. Opportunity to contribute to work spanning brand identity, campaigns, digital experiences, and experiential projects. Potential for ongoing collaboration based on project needs and fit. Portfolio Your portfolio is the most important part of your application. Please share a portfolio that demonstrates your approach to brand thinking, art direction, visual identity, and creative problem-solving. We’re interested in seeing the thinking behind the work, not just polished final visuals. Location: Remote (US & Canada only) Annual salary: $180,000 - $210,000 USD (Final base salary within this range will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate's experience, skills, qualifications, and geographic location) Type: 6 month contract with potential FTE conversion Reports to: VP of Design Nex has always been design-led. There's deep ex-Apple DNA on the team, and we make decisions from first principles rather than by copying whatever our competitors shipped last quarter. We're looking for a Creative Director to raise the creative quality of everything Nex puts into the world. This is rare opportunity to help mold the creative organization's culture and scale it up as the team grows. You'll lead and develop our marketing creative team while remaining deeply involved in the work itself. You'll help shape campaign concepts, establish creative direction, develop ideas, review work, and occasionally get your hands dirty when the work needs it. But your greatest impact will come from making the people and work around you better. You'll take broad marketing and business objectives and turn them into creative work that people actually want to see. We're not looking for someone who simply knows how to make polished advertising. We're looking for someone who knows how to make great ideas. Someone who can recognize a genuinely original idea when they see it, push a good idea into a great one, and know when something isn't good enough to ship. You should have a track record of creating campaigns that people remember, talk about, and share. Own creative direction for Nex's marketing campaigns and communications, from concept through launch. - Translate business objectives into compelling creative strategies and ideas. Develop and challenge concepts, platforms, and campaign directions. Push the team toward work that is distinctive, surprising, and memorable. Set the creative vision and maintain it through execution. Set and uphold a high creative bar across campaigns, paid media, social, retail, launches, and partnerships. Know when work is good, great, or not ready to ship, and have the authority to redirect it when needed. Stay close to the craft while empowering the team to execute. - Concept and pitch ideas; develop creative directions, mood boards, style frames, and visual approaches. Art direct creative production across design, motion, illustration, photography, and other mediums. Get hands-on in creative tools when useful. Give clear, actionable feedback that materially improves the work. Know when to step in and when to let the team own the execution. Your job is to make sure the right idea gets made exceptionally well. Lead and develop our marketing creative team and future creative talent. - Coach creatives to strengthen craft, conceptual thinking, strategic judgment, and presentation skills. Build a culture of candid critique, experimentation, high standards, and low ego. Create an environment where people actively seek feedback and grow from it. Hire thoughtfully and raise the caliber of the team as Nex grows. Great creative teams don't need more meetings - they need better ones. - Establish focused, efficient creative reviews with clear decision-making. Help distinguish strategic feedback, creative feedback, and personal preference. Build processes and rituals that enable speed without compromising quality. Continuously improve how the team briefs, develops, reviews, and ships creative. Collaborate with partners to turn business objectives into creative opportunities. - Challenge briefs and bring creative thinking into strategy early. Identify opportunities to make Nex more culturally relevant and distinctive. Present and defend creative thinking with confidence and clarity. Balance creative ambition with audience needs, business goals, timelines, and resources. Build strong relationships with senior partners. - Help non-creative stakeholders understand what makes creative effective. Bring people along without letting consensus replace good creative judgment. Be a thoughtful advocate for the work while staying pragmatic. Become a trusted creative voice when the right answer isn't obvious. We're less interested in where you worked than in what you made. You might have worked at an agency. You might have built campaigns inside a consumer brand. You might have worked across entertainment, technology, fashion, media, culture, or something we haven't thought of. What matters is that you've demonstrated an ability to make exceptional creative work. 10+ years in design and creative, with real experience in creative direction for campaigns and multi-channel initiatives and leading teams. You've been a creative director or design lead somewhere the work was held to a high standard, and you've grown people while doing it. Obsession with craft. You don't settle. You're still actively working on your own taste by following people whose work you admire, making things, paying attention. Excellent taste and attention to detail across typography, layout, color, and composition. Strong conceptual thinking and the ability to translate strategy into compelling visual ideas. You move fast without much oversight. We're small and resource-constrained. Ambiguity is normal and information is usually incomplete. We need someone who can get things moving anyway and be scrappy about it. You take hard feedback well and give it clearly. Our culture involves direct critique in both directions. Being able to hear "this isn't good enough" without deflating, and say it to others without deflating them, is essential. High curiosity; you see the world a little differently. In our experience that's the most reliable marker of a strong creative thinker. You connect creative decisions to business outcomes like unit sales, retail performance, and market expansion. Taste matters, but so does the P&L. Comfortable being hands-on. This isn't a role where you only review work. Some weeks you'll be in Figma, or writing copy, or redlining packaging artwork yourself. Comfortable operating in a small, fast-moving environment with evolving priorities. Strong sense of ownership and accountability for creative outcomes. Passion for building a brand that is playful, distinctive, and emotionally resonant. The work is better: Nex campaigns have more ambition, stronger ideas, sharper craft, and a distinctive creative point of view. The ideas survive: Our strongest creative concepts remain strong as they move from pitch to production to launch instead of getting diluted along the way. The team is stronger: Our creatives have developed better judgment, stronger craft, and more confidence in their ability to make great work. Reviews are better: Creative reviews are faster, clearer, and more useful. The team spends more time making the work and less time navigating unnecessary process. People come to you: Designers and marketers proactively seek your perspective because they know you have good taste, make the work better, and care about helping them succeed. Partners trust your team: You've built a reputation for being a strategic partner who makes Marketing more effective, not simply a team that produces assets. You can operate independently: The organization is able to make high-quality creative decisions without escalating every question. This isn't a role for someone who primarily wants to manage. It's not a role for someone who thinks creative leadership means having the final say on every decision. It's not a role for someone who needs a large team or a big budget to create interesting work or be productive. And it's not a role for someone whose definition of great creative is simply polished execution; we believe big ideas and strong concepts are how we connect meaningfully with the world. We're looking for a creative leader who can raise the ambition of the work, develop the people making it, and build a creative organization capable of producing exceptional work consistently. Impact: Your work will directly influence our brand and how the world sees us. Growth: Opportunities for professional growth and development. Culture: A supportive and inclusive environment where your ideas matter. Flexibility: We offer flexible working hours and remote work options to fit your lifestyle. Competitive compensation package. Flexible working hours and vacation policy. Product-driven culture that treasures talents and individual growth. Front-row seat and hands-on experience with cutting edge technologies in the evolving gaming field Nex is located in San Jose, California, USA and Hong Kong. Learn more about us at https://www.nexplayground.com/about. We encourage applications even if you don't meet more than 50% of the requirements — we believe that experience comes in many forms! Brand Designer (Digital)

Cloaked

New York City, New York, United Statescontract

Cloaked is a consumer privacy and identity platform on a mission to give people back control of their personal data. We let anyone generate unlimited identities - masked emails, phone numbers, and payment cards - scrub their information off data-broker sites, and shield themselves from spam, scams, and breaches, all from one app. Backed by a $375M Series B, we've protected 10M+ identities and removed 1B+ records from the data brokers who profit off personal information. Now we're building the AI-native future of privacy: autonomous agents that monitor, manage, and defend your digital footprint for you. We’re looking for a Brand Designer (Digital) to lead brand and visual design for Cloaked's white-glove protection offering - our concierge-led service for high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and top executives who've chosen dedicated protection over self-serve. This offering has its own identity, distinct from our core consumer product: premium, understated, and built to earn trust with an audience that expects it. You'll own everything a client sees, from the onboarding experience to the physical materials that arrive at their door, and steward the visual system that holds it together - working directly with the lead for the offering. This is a four-to-six-month contract engagement with the intent to convert to full-time for the right fit. Build the visual system Develop and steward the brand - typography, palette, logo and lockups, photography, layout language - so it reads as authoritative and premium, with restraint over flash Maintain the brand system and guidelines as a living reference the team can work from Design the client experience Design the client-facing onboarding sessions: Figma presentations, screen recordings, and animations that make the concierge journey feel considered and easy to follow Explore and design product-interface concepts - UI mockups and flows for onboarding, interactive tutorials that teach the product, and the on-screen moments shown in client presentations Make the physical artifacts Design tangible, high-touch collateral: leather-bound folders with foil-stamped logos, printed briefs and dossier presentation, and QR-to-digital experiences that bridge print to the app Design intentional, on-brand merchandise for clients and events - considered pieces that reinforce the positioning, not merch for merch's sake Work closely with the team Meet weekly with the lead to review progress and set priorities A portfolio showing brand systems you've built or substantially shaped, not just applied Strong typographic judgment and a point of view on what reads as premium versus what reads as loud Fluency in Figma, including presentation and prototype work Motion and animation skills sufficient to show product flows clearly Print production experience - you know how to prepare files that come back from the printer looking the way you intended Comfort designing UI, even if product design isn't your primary discipline Experience working independently as a contractor with minimal art direction Work with luxury, private banking, high-end hospitality, or other high-net-worth audiences Specialty print experience: foil stamping, embossing, bookbinding, or bespoke packaging Experience designing sub-brands that sit alongside a parent brand without competing with it Exposure to security, privacy, or identity products Merch and physical product design Background working in a startup or high-growth environment Self-starters who take ownership and proactively look for ways to improve things Restraint - the audience is sophisticated and can tell when something is trying too hard Comfort with chaos: priorities shift, context is incomplete, and you move anyway A pragmatic bias toward shipping and iterating over perfecting in isolation Strong communication, and the ability to explain a design decision rather than just present it Genuine care about craft, including in the details nobody asked about Cloaked is a well-funded Series B startup based out of NYC. Although we are a distributed team, the NYC team operates with a hybrid model. We have two floors of our building, with two state of the art kitchens packed with drinks, snacks and everything else you'd need to get through the day. The Cloaked team has diverse interests and so we frequently embark on team outings and go out for socials! Compensation for this contract engagement will be discussed directly with candidates. For full-time US employees, we offer above market rate pay and equity based off of the market's best commercially available data. Your compensation will be a combination of salary, bonus and equity, plus a comprehensive benefits package: medical, dental and vision with Cloaked covering the majority of employee premiums, company-paid basic life, and a 401(k) with company match. We offer flexible work arrangements and the ability to work remotely as needed. Cloaked provides a home office stipend in addition to a new company laptop (and other tech depending on the role). Competitive PTO: PTO, floating holidays and sick days — and we push people to actually use them. We see time off as a preventative burnout measure, not a balance to hoard. Parental Leave: Paid leave for all new parents — birth, adoption, or foster placement — because the people building privacy deserve time with their families. Monthly wellness & meals stipend: Used for any kind of physical, mental or emotional care you'd like to take for yourself, be it a gym membership, a meditation app, or time with a personal trainer — plus lunch and coffee during the workday. Professional Growth: Opportunities for career development and personal growth are provided to all employees who seek to further their knowledge and capabilities through an unlimited professional development fund. Additionally team members are encouraged to regularly attend conferences and industry events. We are really excited about having you join our mission-driven team and help us build the future of online privacy!

This is a hands-on creative role, not a management-only one. The person in this seat needs to have personally originated standout creative concepts, copy, and campaign ideas earlier in their career, for brands that had to win on the strength of the idea rather than budget. This isn't someone who has only briefed, managed, or approved that kind of work; it's someone who can still do it themselves when it counts. Ideal backgrounds include copywriters who've worked at genuinely innovative companies and can point to work they personally shaped. This person will sit on the creative pod and work closely with the client's creative agencies to get top-tier work out the door. They'll oversee both performance-driven campaigns (DR, bottom of funnel) and brand creation campaigns (mid funnel, demand generating), with a stronger lean toward brand and demand creation, since that's where this business is investing right now. What You'll Do Originate and shape sharp, culturally relevant creative concepts and copy yourself, not just brief them out to others Take a product brief and turn it into a strong creative brief the agency can run with, and be hands-on enough to shape the idea itself when needed Guide and shape creative work, including giving feedback on design and jumping in to write or punch up a line of copy to get something over the line Manage agency relationships and hold the bar for top-tier creative Bring brand management discipline to the role: keep the brand consistent, understand its voice deeply, and work effectively with vendors and partners Balance performance marketing priorities with the need to build brand awareness for a challenger product going up against major national carriers What We're Looking For 10+ years of experience, with real Creative Director or hands-on creative authorship credentials, not just brand or campaign management A portfolio of specific, personally originated work for scrappy and/or iconic brands, work that had to earn attention through idea quality, not big budgets- Must have this when you apply A background in copywriting or creative strategy, with a portfolio of ideas and copy you personally originated, not just directed Prior experience at innovative, idea-driven companies where the work had to win on quality of thinking rather than media spend Comfort operating at both ends of the spectrum: writing and concepting hands-on, and managing agency partners at a strategic level Brand management experience, ideally in a challenger or growth-stage context Mobile experience is a nice to have, not a requirement Subscription or tech background is a bonus Interest in AI is a plus. Deep AI background is not required or expected We Are Rosie provides strategic consulting and talent solutions for the marketing industry.
